Measuring the degree of rooting after 60 days of construction
Soil restored with plant roots
After 60 days of planting, we took the samples and found that the roots were tangled together, making the soil firmly adhered. In addition, weeds did not survive due to the vegetation mat, and a planted single herbaceous community was formed which is a typical way of river restoration.
Plant growth rate
We collected the plants 60 days after planting and found that plants grew at a remarkable rate. As shown in the picture, root measured 50cm in length, the stem was 80cm long, and it was found that complete community was formed which measured 130cm in full length.
Problems of conventional construction methods
Conventional river refurbishment placed focus on water control/disaster prevention and river use rather than environmental aspects.
As a result, development of revetment using concrete has led to devastation of river environment, water contamination, and disturbance of ecosystem. In recent years, restoration of rivers has been bolstered by development of various methods.
However, this has also caused many problems to early greening due to low germination rate and low rooting rate which are attributable to vegetation method involving the use of concrete or seed spraying without stabilizing the soil of revetment, the environment for vegetation. In order to solve these problems, slope stability is required for vegetation environment essential for early greening, along with high density planting for high rooting rate. Maximum effort is needed to restore the rivers in which the plants form communities.
Advantages of INWOO Green Vegetation Mat
INWOO Green Vegetation Mat has both disaster prevention effect and environmental advantages.
For environmental advantage, it completely overcame the biggest challenge, the slope stability, for vegetation through mat construction. INWOO Green Vegetation Mat enables early greening within 45 days while maintaining a rooting rate of over 98% through high-density direct planting on stable slopes, unlike conventional methods that have failed in vegetation due to low germination rate and rooting rate. As the multi-layered fiber layer fundamentally prevents growth of weeds, except for selected herbaceous crops, perfect community of selected single herbaceous plants can be created, resulting in creation of very beautiful scenery and revitalization of ecosystem.

Problems of conventional construction methods
Conventional vegetation revetment had the revetment built by using the weight of concrete, and vegetation was planted on a small amount of soil above the concrete which led to the problems of failure of rooting and loss of herbaceous plant even when the amount of rainfall is small. As result, disaster prevention effect was not provided through combination of herbaceous roots and soil in many cases. Furthermore, the matting method led to incomplete fixation of revetment and mat, and as a result, whole mat was curled and lost due to high flow velocity even when one side of the mat was slightly lost. In addition, seed method led to low germination rate and low growth rate, and various kinds of grasses grow at a low density and failed to form a community, and their roots were not tangled to each other which led to failure to achieve slop stability. Consequently, slope collapse, sliding phenomenon, slope erosion, etc., occurred, causing much damage, during heavy rains.
Advantages of INWOO Green Vegetation Method
Green Vegetation Mat method is used for high-density direct planting of 20 to 25 vegetation per ㎡ on the slope mounted with bamboo fixing pins which are densely fitted to multi-layer mat made of natural materials. In that way, complete greening is formed within 45 days after construction. When this method is used, plant roots and multi-layer mats are tangled together to fundamentally stabilize the slope by net effect, pile effect, and erosion prevention effect and to prevent damage such as slope collapse, erosion and sliding in heavy rainfall. In addition, the shear stress of revetment was increased due to multi-layer mat and fixing pins mounted densely on the revetment to fundamentally prevent mat curling caused by flow velocity. It is an excellent method that can be an effective countermeasure against scour through integration with basic scour protection.
